Lorna’s Laces

This week’s new to Doodlebug yarn is Lorna’s Laces Shepherd Worsted and Shepherd Sock.  We’re so happy to finally be able to offer this yarn, it’s been a long time coming.

You see, Lorna’s Laces was one of the first yarns we wanted to carry when Doodlebug opened last year and they were one of the first lines we approached when starting the store.  And then……they sent me a sample box of all their yarns and colors……That’s when my head started to spin.  I must have pulled that sample box out over 100 times trying to figure out which yarns and colors I should start with.  As a new and relatively small shop, I can’t carry all of them, no matter how much I’d love to.

So with the needle arts trade show rapidly approaching in a couple months, I decided to wait and meet with the nice folks at Lorna’s Laces in person and make my decision there.

So, that was the plan.  Last June was my first market, which is where all the yarn companies come and exhibit all of their yarns and the retailers come to see what’s new and to place their fall orders.  Let’s just say that I was a little overwhelmed.  The yarn!  The colors!  The famous knitters walking around in the wild!  Lucky for me, I had decided to drag my sweet husband along with me to help me practice some restraint.

I managed to get orders placed with a lot of yarn companies in those couple of days.  As time was running out, sweet husband kept asking me ,what about Lorna’s Laces?  You haven’t placed your order there yet.  I kept going to their booth.  I kept looking at all the yarn and colors and beautiful sample garments they had on display.  And still I didn’t make a decision.

Back from the market, all the orders I placed started arriving and I still pulled out that sample box at least once a week.  Still couldn’t decide.  And, to make matters worse, they kept sending me samples of even more new colors that were being introduced every few months or so.

So, fast forward a few months and the Winter market in January of this year.  I told myself that I wasn’t going to leave until I was able to place my order with Lorna’s Laces.  And I decided to take a different approach.  I met with Beth Casey, the owner of Lorna’s and told her my story about not being able to pick colors.  I asked her to pick the colors for me, and that’s what she did.  I will admit that I felt a little better about the whole thing since she struggled a bit making the decision!

I also added some of the most recent colors they’ve come out with including Brooklyn Tweed’s Grand Street Ink.  They asked Jared Flood to come up with a color commentary and this gorgeous color is the result.  It’s a little dark and brooding and I just love it.  I have it in both the worsted and sock.  This is one of those colors that is really tough to capture on film and a little tough to describe.  It’s a little purpley, brownish and a little wine mixed in.

I think Beth did a fantastic job and I hope you enjoy the selection.  I know I already have a couple projects in mind for this beautiful yarn.  Picking the projects has been much easier than deciding on the bases and colors for sure!
