This morning I woke up to a winter wonderland – our second major snowstorm in two weeks. That can only mean one thing – time to get started on the holiday gift knitting! Here at Doodlebug, we’re celebrating gift knitting for the whole month of November. We’ll be highlighting small, quick projects all month long and of course there will be fun giveaways right here on this blog. Every Wednesday, we’ll have a new prize available and we’ll announce the winner on the following Monday.
This week, we’re talking about hats. Who wouldn’t love a hand knit hat for a holiday gift? They’re fun to make, very quick and a great way to try out a new technique.
Here are a few of our favorites:
Boo Hat from Terri Kruse. Who wouldn’t love to knit one of these for a special little one in their life? I’m really crazy about the pom-pom’s on the ends and I can see making this for grown-ups too, with or without the ears. Maybe in a favorite sports team color?
Or maybe something a little slouchy? This is ETTA, a free pattern available on Ravelry by Kim Whelan. ETTA requires just one skein of Cascade 220 which makes it a very economical choice.
One of my current favorites that I’m going to cast on tonight is Give ‘em the Slip by Triona Murphy. I love that the slipped stitches have the look of cables but no cable needle needed.
This weeks prize is one skein of Malabrigo Merino Worsted in Lettuce and the Give ‘em the Slip pattern gifted through Ravelry. If you’re not a member of Ravelry, you can join for free here.
So, what do you have to do to win? Just leave a comment on this blog post with your favorite hat pattern. We’ll draw the winner with random number generator on Monday morning. Easy!
We really look forward to seeing your favorite pattern ideas.

My favorite hat pattern has to be the free Ravelry pattern “Star Crossed Slouchy Beret” by Natalie Larson. I’ve already made 3 of them, and I’m about to cast on a 4th. I also like Jared Flood’s “Habitat”. Really, give me any hat with cables and I’ll fall in love. Not too difficult, yet non-knitters are always impressed- the perfect gift!
oooh, I love Malabrigo, and I’ve been wanting some in Lettuce! my favorite hat pattern is probably Koolhaas. thanks for this chance to win!
Oh, I’ve never knit with Malabrigo but I’d really like to try it. My favorite hat pattern is Eomer’s Shield Tam – a cool colorwork tam.
I adore both the Boo Hat and ETTA! The Boo Hat is actually perfect for something I had in mind for two adult friends for Christmas. And ETTA — who doesn’t have at least 1 rogue skein of Cascade 220 leftover from something that needs a 1 skein project?
My back deck looks about the same as yours today — great time for knitting!
Trace
I have to admit, I want a Boo hat for myself!
Oh I’d love to win. Have not had a chance to work with malabrigo yet. My fav hat pattern I think is the “Big girl bonnet” on rav.
Thank you
Lately I like to create hat patterns as I go based on stitch patterns from other projects.
My favorite hat is Minty from Knitty. Very easy and slouchy too!
My favorite kiddo hat pattern is aviatrix. Still looking for a hat pattern with ear flaps but no strings to turn make my picky large beaked husband.
My favorite hat pattern is Kent’s beret. While the provisional cast on and hat band can be a little fiddly, the results are definitely worth it!
Right now, my favorite hat pattern is Etta! Still knitting, although my broken arm slows me down. Need another hat for what promises to be a very snowy winter!
I really love the DROPS design b18-5 Hat in ”Fabel” It reminds me of a lovely Norwegian hat I fell in love with.
Hurricane Hat, on Ravelry. I knit it with some handdyed yarn, and it looks amazing.
The purl ridges are kind of a jerk to have to go back and fix, since chances are you shifted the entire spiral, but that’s more of my fault than the pattern’s. Simple pattern, awesome result.
I like http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/orchids–fairy-lights this hat very much!
I think I will knit it at some point soon…
My favorite hat is a toss up between Wabbit Season by Alex Tinsley and Free Rapunzel by Tiny Owl Knits… both are super cute and have ear flaps and tassels/pom-poms. Who doesn’t love a hat with tassels and pom-poms??
I love malabrigo yarn so soft and squishy My favorite is the Quick Cable Slouch Hat
by Azure
What a coincidence that you are starting this off with hats! Just a week ago I finished a hat that will be a Christmas gift for my sister. I made her the Icing Swirl Hat by Ysolda Teague. Here’s the link: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/icing-swirl-hat It was my first time knitting this pattern, and I love it! Such a quick, fun, and unique looking hat. I will definitely make myself one, too. Thank you for this giveaway!
I just knit the Meret as a Christmas gift. I fell in love with the shaping and how well the pattern is written. I knit it as a super slouch. Thanks for the link to Etta. That is another nice slouch.
I really like the Fraggle Hat I just made
My absolute favorite hat pattern is Sea Beanie by Elena Nodel. I LOVE the look of the cables. I think I want to make one for myself in every different color of the rainbow!
My new favorite hat is the Rikke Hat. It’s all garter stitch. I just knit one as a gift and now have to have one myself!
I just love the Fish hat – but I tend to make simple roll brimmed hats…
I’ve knit the Hannah ponytail hat twice, and love it, but at the moment I can’t wear it, cause I don’t have a ponytail!
My favourite hat pattern is the Nellas Telrúnya Aviator Tam:
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/nellas-telrunya-aviator-tam
It’s so delightfully oversized and decadent!
My favorite hat pattern is the Jacques Cousteau Hat. My husband loves it!
ditto on the orchids and fairy lights hat..just knit it and its so good!
I plan to make the Morgan hat for my boyfriend for Christmas. He’ll look very dashing in it! And I have a couple of Dead Fish Hats planned for the grandbabies.
I just finished my 14th hat this year a few weeks ago, but out of all of them, my favorite is Ysolda’s Verity hat- it fits just right and makes any bad hair day better!
I haven’t knitted a lot of hats (maybe 5 or so), but currently my favourite pattern is Nottingham by Melissa Mall — because my sweetie requested his first ever knitted item from me (awwww!), and he wants a hat for our upcoming trip to New York, and that’s the one I chose to meet his criteria (he’s very picky.) I can’t say I’m really enjoying it though, although that might be because I’m learning how to do cables without a cable needle, and it’s nerve-wracking.
I’ve been trying to find the right pattern to do for myself for this trip too. I knitted a hat that had a rather square shape and it was a gorgeous alpaca yarn, and I wanted to love the hat, but it looked a little too much like a flowerpot on my head. So I frogged it.
I LOVE the Give ‘Em the Slip pattern! It’s just my style, and green is my favourite colour.
I haven’t knit it yet, but I love the Trilobite hat pattern I found on Ravelry. I even have the yarn to make one to match a scarf I knit. One of these days…
Turn A Square
by Jared Flood is a favorite for me-thanks for all the suggestions-will have a great time looking on Ravelry,
After just seeing Lil Boo hat I think this has just become my favorite hat pattern!
My favourite hat is the Girl with the Purl Earring Hat by Michelle Miller. I’ve knitted two and it’s not only a pretty hat, it’s also fun to knit.
It changes often, but my favorite hat pattern these days is Meret (Mystery Beret). Love the lace pattern and the slouch!
I made Shroom by Lee Juvan for myself out of Fleece Artist Big Merino and I adore it – warm, slouchy, fun.
At the moment my favourite is from Knit One Crochet Too and it is Rasta Hat by Hélène Rush. Slouchy beret type and a doddle to knit, it was the yarns used that made it look special. I like tams too and find it hard to decide a favourite as I have knitted so many I like!
I love the Shroom hat pattern. Knits up fast and looks great on.
Turn A Square is the hat of choice for my son. I also want to make the Mimosa Slouch Beanie for my daughter.
My grandkids would Love Lil Boo, though!
@Jeffiknitter – I too have knit the Star Crossed Slouchy Beret – beautiful!! If you’ve never done cables, this pattern is a perfect first try – very easy. Currently making “man socks” with the Globe Trotter Socks pattern (on Rav) – love the pattern! Could easily be for a woman as well.
Definately , give em the slip….I dont need ears and my daughter is too big
thanks
biddy05 (rav)
My favorite hat will ALWAYS be Koolhaas – what an awesome looking hat!
I’ve made 2 Knotty but Nice hats. The recipients love them and they’re fun to knit.
I loved knitting the Brambles beret, although I gifted it as I don’t think I look good in hats. And Malabrigo is my obsession! Yum!
I don’t really have a favorite pattern for hats but hats are my favorite thing to knit so I like to try out new patterns.
Hats! Hats are my favorite things! (And Malabrigo my favorite yarn- this giveaway is right up my alley.) I think I’ll have to say Tiny Owl’s deer hat- so flippin cute. I’ll get around to making it someday.
I like the etta slouchy hat. I think I will add that to my todo list.
I seem to make lots of hats for other people, but not so many for myself. That will all change this winter though, as I have “Capucine” all lined up in my Rav queue — for me!
My favorites are K-T boundary hat and entrelac beanie!
I think the Etta pattern is very pretty – perfect for some of my teen cousins/nieces. I’m also curious about slipping stitches to get the look of a cable….??? Aaaaaand Lettuce would be a perfect color to knit something for my sister! =}
I haven’t made this yet, but it’s on my to-do list: http://freddyknits.blogspot.com/2005/03/beginners-fair-isle-baby-hat-free.html (and it’s free!)
I have been knitting hats for the last 4 years they are my go to knit. My latest fav is Poppy. I have knit the newborn size for a friend’s baby as well as the adult size for my Mom.
My favorite hat pattern is Capucine. It knits up so quickly and is so fuzzeh.
I haven’t knit many hats, but the Star Crossed Slouchy Beret has been a great hat to have. I made it in Malabrigo Twist.
I just finished my first hat in years, a Tweedy Cabled Hat and I love it but a friend introduced me to Beanie No. 212. She made me try on the one she’d just finished and I was hooked (needled?)! So for today at least, the Beanie is my fave. Must admit tho’ that a Boo hat (for myself) would make me very happy.
hmmmm… the first thing I ever knit was a hat and have not stopped… love the poppy version of Aviatrix, and I would love to win the lettuce yarn. I grew organic lettuces for a farmers market this year…. so anything lettuce is exciting!
My favorite hat pattern is super simple and the best go to for gifts. It is Kim’s Hats in Joelle Hoverson’s book Last Minute Knitted Gifts. http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/kims-hats
made my daughter the real stocking hat from knitty several years ago. She loved that hat.

I’ve never knit any adult hats but have knit a few for babies… I like the hat and mitts pattern that you’ve put up here – Give ‘em the slip – looks lovely, may be I should try and make one for myself!
I love the Gehry hat pattern http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gehry
I like to use basic hat patterns such as the J Crew Style Hat or Bev’s Really Basic Stretchy Hat. I love the picture of all of the snow.
My favorite hat pattern is the 16 Sixteen Cable Hat on Ravelry
I love the Hurricane Hat pattern… so simple, yet such great results!
I like the Star Crossed Slouchy Beret, and my own pattern the Falling Leaves Hat. Both work great with Malabrigo!
Yippie yahoo! So glad I no longer live were we get the wild snow storms. Oops, am I rubbing it in? Sorry.
LOL! I think you did just rub it in!
I prefer just to make up my own hat patterns on the fly. My favorite of published patterns is Coronet from Knitty.
I like the Driftwood Cap by Ellen Gormley.
I love Tiny Owl Knits’ (Stephanie Dosen’s) Parseltongue pattern. I’ve made two and see more in my future.
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/the-parseltongue-hat
ETTA has just become my favorite! Thank you!
My new favorite is the Scathch’s Hat by Mona NicLeoid that Katie from Knittin’ on The Fly did for the PPC. Worked up great and the pattern was very easy to follow.
Wow! Love the first photo – looks like winter wonderland!
My favorite hat pattern is the Butterfly Hat, this is how I knitted it for a baby girl with matching baby socks: http://ravel.me/Fleurtje-Eliza/bh.
Have a nice weekend, all! Ciao, Fleur (Fleurtje-Eliza on Ravelry)
I’ve only recently got into knitting hats and it is addictive ! I love Stephen West (Westknits on Ravelry) designs and am on my third ‘Piece out ‘ hat, so easy and quirky.
Lettuce is one of my all time favourite colours so fingers crossed!
I love giveaways, thanks for the chance to win! My favorite crocheted hat pattern is one of my own designs, I admit – the shells & chains slouchy beret pattern. My favorite knitted hat pattern? I looked at my finished projects on ravelry, & the knitted hat I’ve made the most is http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/two-needle-garter-cap
I think my favorite hat is Autumn Vines Beret by Never Not Knitting. However, that darling Boo hat just may knock it out of the #1 spot!
Zowmom on Ravelry
Maybe Turn a Square? I haven’t knit many hats yet, but I’ve got plans for a few this winter.
I haven’t made a hat yet but from the looks of it, my favourite hat pattern is the Brambles Beret. But Give em’ the Slip is pretty darn cute too!
I have to admit that I have never attempted a hat, at least not yet. But I have always wanted to knit hats for the new babies, especially the NICU babies, at some of the hospitals here in Milwaukee. The pattern I found that looks easy to try is
http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/easy-peasy-newborn-sock-hat
My favourite hat right now is the Tweed Bow Beanie by Jessica Kahele.
I’ve never knit with Malabrigo … I haven trying for months to get a skein to try..
Love the boo hat and the slouchy!
Love! Love! Love the green! My favorite hat pattern for a quick baby hat is Easy Knit Spiral Hat. Sometimes I do a quick bind-off for a puffy look. Sometimes I make it into a little pointed elf hat and sometimes I bind off and tie off ears in each corner on top.
I’m looking forward to making my first Koolhaas — hope that’s close enough to a favorite! I’ve never knit with Malabrigo, and would love to try it!
I have had the Slouched Tuva Hat by Turvid in my Ravelry Q since I joined. I am really wanting to make that hat. I have also been eyeing Malabigo yarns and I am so happy to be entering this drawing. Thank you.
Calorimetry…sort of a cross between a headband and a hat. Keeps my ears warm!
I really love my Koolhaas hat but also just made Hermione hearts Ron for a friend last week and it’s gorgeous–now i want one!
I have a hat on my needles right now!
The Braided Brim Hat Pattern is my most favorite. Can just imagine how beautiful it would be in Malabrigo.
Hmm… favourite hat pattern… I really like slouchy hats, but I don’t have a favourite! Also fair isle/other colourwork hats… so many beautiful kinds! I really enjoyed knitting the Hurricane Hat last winter!
I made the Brambles beret recently, I love it! Funny, I was just checking out the Malabrigo in that colorway for fingerless mitts!
Am I too late?~
My favorite hat pattern is the norwegian star earflap hat. It is easy and pretty!!
I really really like the Ferry Hat by Cirilia Rose. I just made it and it is warm and fun.
Erica
Malabrigo is my favorite and the hat pattern is adorable! My favorite hat pattern so far has been the simple family hat from More Last Minute Gifts from Joelle Hoverson. It’s so simple and creates a lovely hat.
